A MULTI-STOREYED Hyatt hotel in Bridgetown could be the catalyst for the revival and re-energising of Barbados’ main city.

Real estate executive Andrew Mallalieu yesterday described the controversial proposed development as “a good thing”, while also expressing his support for building a high-rise structure, instead of a smaller hotel at the Bay Street location.

“I think that the Hyatt and any other proposal for a multi-storey hotel in that particular location is a very good use of our land. I think it is in keeping with Town Planning policy and I personally support that it would happen,” said Mallalieu, who is chief executive officer at the Terra Group of Companies.

He was adding his voice to a raging debate about whether the Hyatt should be constructed on the site of the old Harbour Police Station, and in the midst of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. (GC)
