GOVERNMENT IS ESTABLISHING a special minimum wage advisory board amid concerns that some Barbadians, especially domestic workers and shop assistants, are now underpaid.
While he was confident that the majority of employers were not “rogues and vagabonds”, Minister of Industry and Commerce Donville Inniss said the existing legislation governing minimum wages was not only limited but “very antiquated”.
He was speaking in the House of Assembly on Tuesday while leading off debate on the Minimum Wage Bill.
The new nine-member board will be established to advise the minister on minimum wage policy. Three members will each be nominated by Government, employers’ representatives and the labour movement. (SC)
