FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS ARE crippling the production of the sugar cane in Barbados, a scientist said.

Unit head of the Agronomy Research Variety Testing Unit Sandra Bellamy spoke after an agricultural management workshop on Friday at the unit’s home at Groves, St George.

Bellamy said the financial situation was dire and some of the farmers have not been paid in full from last year’s harvest.

She also said that sugar producers were being blamed for the state of the industry when other factors had contributed to the situation.

“You always hear people say the cane varieties of today are no good, well they obviously don’t look very good but it is not the variety at blame if other issues at play,” she said.
