QUEEN’S COUNSEL RALPH THORNE has been rebuked by a judge in the Turks and Caicos Islands after resigning, via email, from a high-profile corruption case involving former premier Michael Misick.

Thorne emailed his resignation to Justice Paul Harrison on January 30 after the judge ordered him to return to the island to give account of his continued absence from the case.

According to media reports from the British territory, Thorne, the lead defence lawyer, failed to show up when the trial resumed on January 16, prompting the court to hold a closed-door session with his client.

Two weeks later, when the case resumed, Harrison, speaking from the bench, said he had instructed Thorne to show up that day, but instead of doing so, he had tendered his resignation with immediate effect. (MB)
