IT WAS REPORTED in the SUNDAY SUN of February 12 that Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins suggested that carpooling is one of the recommended policies coming from the Town Planning Department, the agency overseeing the island’s land use, and it is also under consideration by the Ministry of Transport and Works which regulates road use.
The recommendation formed part of the Physical Development Plan.
This writer is not sure if it would work, because there are too many people who worship their vehicles and do not want others, including their family, to even touch or drive in them.
For the proposals to work, car owners must remove their selfishness, for there are so many selfish persons in the world. I am also sure that there are many relatives who are not on speaking terms with each other and will not cooperate.
And if it does work, I can see it happening only in the morning period. The evening period can pose many challenges for there are persons who attend evening classes and would prefer to use their own transportation.
I do believe that park and ride can work, but it must be well thought out and planned.
It worked for Cricket World Cup 2007, because people were all going the same place at the same time. I am convinced that people are not going to put down their vehicles and travel in buses if they do not have the same comfort as travelling in their own vehicles.
Another option that can be considered is that of not allowing vehicles to go into Bridgetown.
In England vehicles are not allowed into Central London; one has to travel by train, bus, or foot.
When it comes to traffic, something has to be done for a recent report says there are about 140 000 vehicles on the road. Good luck to all those who can arrive at the answers.
Moravian T20
The Moravian Church Rev. Rudolph Holder Memorial Shield Tape Ball T20 Cricket Competition bowls off tonight at the James Bryan Complex, Market Hill, St George. Defending champions Dunscombe play Sharon at 7 p.m.
Motorcade
A motorcade will be held by the All Souls Church tomorrow between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The motorcade will begin at the church hall on Holligan Road, Bank Hall (behind the church), and travel through various communities in the parish.
Yard sale
A yard sale of household items and furniture will be held at James Street Methodist Church tomorrow from 8 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Services
There will be one service at the St Mary’s Church on Sunday at 8 a.m. The annual parish meeting will be held immediately after service.
In the evening at 6 o’clock, there will be a public concert: An Evening of Classical Music. In attendance will be the Royal Barbados Police Force Band and the St Leonard’s Boys’ Choir.
Clifton Hill harvest
The annual harvest of Clifton Hill Moravian Church, Clifton Hill, St Thomas, will be held on Sunday at the church at 3:30 p.m.
Tea with George
The American Women’s Club will host an afternoon Tea with George on Sunday to commemorate the 265th anniversary of the historic visit at George Washington House, Bush Hill, Garrison, St Michael, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
International Women’s Day
There will be a prayer breakfast on Wednesday, March 8, International Women’s Day, with the joyful celebration of the Eucharist at The Crane Resort at 7:30 a.m. Guest speaker and prayer leader will be Rev. Marcelle Brathwaite of Belmont Methodist Church.
Death
It is with regret that we learnt of the death of Pedro Newsam, who will be buried on Monday after a funeral service at the St John Parish Church at 3:30 p.m.
