DEAR CHRISTINE: He’s a cheat but my love is blind

DEAR CHRISTINE, I am passionately fond of a young man who keeps doing things that cause my parents to warn and fret with me. To begin with, he drinks.

He drinks a lot but can hold his liquor. I have caught him telling me lies on repeated occasions and each time he asks pardon and promises not to do so again. I forgive him.

Even though I give him all he asks for he has been unfaithful on more than one occasion. Again, he makes excuses and because I care for him, I take him back.

I know a lot of what my parents say is right but, I am passionately fond of him. There is no other man I know who I get so excited about and who seems to satisfy my needs.

True, I have not had any other real experience to speak about as he has been the only man in my life, but I doubt that anyone could ever take his place in this respect.

I would like your advice on this matter, for even though I am afraid of the future with him, I am also afraid of the future without him.

Dear ND,

I gather that you have a strong physical passion for your boyfriend and because of this you are prepared to put up with all his other failings.

Have you ever thought of what it would be like when this strong, wild physical passion ends? You cannot build a future on such a flimsy structure as physical passion only.

It would be like building a house on shifting sand. For marriage to succeed, you need the solid rock of friendship, love and trust, just to mention a few of the essential qualities for happy togetherness

What you feel will eventually cool off, what then would you have?
