WOMEN WHOSE LIVES were lost because of domestic violence were remembered at the Life In Leggings march over the weekend.
Head of the University of the West Indies’ Institute for Gender & Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit, Dr Charmaine Crawford, held them up during her remarks before the march left Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon.
“By taking to the streets today, we mourn the lives lost to intimate partner violence. We remember Kimberley Lovell, a nurse and mother of two young children; Cally-Ann Gill, a mother of seven; Linda Tull, Brenda Belle, Laurette Skeete and Krystal Lovell, whose stories captured headlines over the last five years. In particular, we revive the memories of 2013, when nine women lost their lives to intimate partner violence committed by men,” Crawford told the gathering.
She also spoke of St Lucian Sophia Edwards, who was killed by her boyfriend on her birthday a few weeks ago; and Nadina Simms, Shannon Banfield, Rachael Ramkisson and Jamilia Derevenaux of Trinidad and Tobago. (YB)
