MANAGEMENT of Massy Stores met with the Barbados Workers’ Union yesterday to discuss temporary lay-offs as a result of the ongoing reconstruction of the Holetown branch.
The meeting began around 10 a.m., and following a break for lunch, resumed around 12:30 p.m.
An hour later, people were seen leaving as the official meeting was apparently over even though many of the staff stayed behind to discuss the situation among themselves for another few minutes.
Directors of the conglomerate declined to comment, but Sir Roy Trotman, who said he was an adviser to the process, spoke briefly to the WEEKEND NATION.
“We were discussing temporary lay-offs due to the continued changes to the old building, lay-offs which should last for about three to four months. This will inconvenience people so we are talking about how this could be done properly and this process is ongoing,” he said.
Some employees who attended the meeting expressed disgust over the matter, with one saying “Massy is a mess”.
The WEEKEND NATION attempted to contact Massy stores managing director Randall Banfield, operations director Richard Cox and public relations manager Jennifer Branch-Maloney for comment but was unsuccessful. (CA)
