IF ATTORNEY GENERAL Adriel Brathwaite gets his way, Barbados will soon have its very first court dedicated to crimes committed by individuals with mental “disabilities”.
Although Brathwaite didn’t explain in detail how such a court would operate, he touted it as a good solution for Barbados.
Primarily because, according to him, large numbers of incarcerated persons at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds, have mental health challenges.
During his speech at last evening’s sitting of the House, the ruling Democratic Labour Party St Philip South MP stated that crime was costing the country $155 million per annum. This, he noted, was money that could be directed elsewhere, and that is why there is a need for initiatives to reduce crime. And he referenced other jurisdictions as an example that his idea of the court is workable. (SDB)
