KINGSTON — Corporal punishment was in the spotlight this afternoon when Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed disapproval of parents and public institutions using violence to discipline children.

He was making his presentation on the 2017/18 estimates of expenditure (budget) to Parliament.

Holness said violence was a social problem in Jamaica, and citizens have begun “relating to others with violence”.

He further suggested that through corporal punishment, parents taught children that the proper way to respond to a wrong was with violence and abusive language.

He also said public institutions should not use corporal punishment in modern Jamaica.

The prime minister also expressed discontent with the prevalence of violence in intimate relationships, as he complained about what he called a culture of violence. (Jamaica Observer)
