ALGERNON SYMMONDS spent the greater part of his life serving Barbados, and yesterday many beneficiaries expressed gratitude by turning out for his funeral service at James Street Methodist Church in The City.
Symmonds’ long career in the Civil Service saw him serving in the capacity of permanent secretary in several ministries during the administrations of two prime ministers.
He was the young solicitor who was seconded to be permanent secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1966, to then Premier Errol Barrow, to assist with the constitutional arrangements for Independence.
After Independence he was appointed permanent secretary in that ministry. (GC)
