Study: Sex work a means of support

THE DRIVE TO provide for their family is being identified as a main reason for women getting into sex work.

Two members from local organisation Jabez House spoke yesterday based on research done on the lives of 30 prostitutes.

The study, done by a Canadian-based Barbadian PhD student and a medical doctor, was entitled The Experiences And Needs Of Women Engaged In Transactional Sex Work in Barbados.

Allison Beckles, who works with Jabez House, which works to help educate sex workers and get them off the streets, explained that the 30 women ranged in age from 18 to 62 years old. She said they found that motherhood was a major area for those interviewed, with only one childless, some with two or three children and others had five each. (AD)
