“And he answer him, let it alone Sir, this year also, till I dig about it and put on manure and if it bears fruit next year, well and good, but if not, you can cut it down” – Luke 13:8-9
ON TUESDAY night last week, while listening to one of my favourite shows, Mason and Guests, I was shocked when I heard West Indies Test and One-Day International captain Jason Holder ask Andrew Mason why he had not had one-on-one conversations with the cricketer.
Mason has been a constant critic of Holder’s credentials as a leader and apparently passed up several opportunities to speak directly with the captain.
I really enjoyed the entertaining programme. As one writer said, it appeared that the broadcaster was stumped without the need for recourse of the television umpire.
We must remember that Holder is still very young, only 25, with just 20 Tests and fewer than 50 first-class matches. He leads a team which is performing disappointingly and there are still some worrying issues in West Indies cricket. Remember he was appointed less than a year after the aborted Indian trip in 2014.
As far as I am concerned, Holder has handled himself remarkably well.
He had the courage to defend himself in public. I would advise him to try to perform at his best and not allow the criticism to get to him.
The ball is now in Mason’s court and we will wait and see how he plays it.
