MALCOLM MAYERS is a man with vision.
He has single-handedly transformed his parents’ small shop – Big M Variety – into an artistic interpretation of times past, and has done so with no formal training as a craftsman.
Mayers has the brightly coloured, though unfinished shop in Bloomsbury, St Thomas, painted in the national colours of blue, gold and black, complete with his personal interpretations of the Broken Trident.
He also has a flat-screen television placed in a way, he said, that was reminiscent of bygone days when the less fortunate peeped through a window to watch someone else’s television.
“My parents ran the place for 14 years. In 2011 I started to convert it into a bar and restaurant and I’m still in that process. I have done it in the national colours and I am promoting the Trident because that is who we are. I am not a painter, joiner, carpenter or artist – all of this was just inspiration,” he said.
Mayers said his father had passed away and his mother was 98 years old, but their legacy would live on through him. (CA)
