MARCH THREAT

THE BARBADOS SECONDARY TEACHERS’ UNION (BSTU) got the backing of its members, the Barbados Workers’ Union and the National Union of Public Workers for its March For Respect yesterday morning.

But the public was a lot less supportive. And the teachers’ employer is threatening to dock their pay.

In a memo from the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education to the principals of public nursery, primary and secondary schools, dated Monday, the teachers and their union were warned that the march during school hours was “tantamount to industrial action”.

Citing sections of the General Orders that allow for the salaries and wages of officers and employers who go on strike to be docked, the memo asked the principals to submit the names of the teachers, as well as the time they left for and returned from the march, to the ministry. (HLE)
