THE MINISTRY of Labour has devised a formal framework to guide the granting of work permits to non-nationals, amid concern among labour and the public about the process.

Statistics obtained by the SUNDAY SUN revealed that permit approvals showed a marked spike between 2013 and 2015, the last years for which figures are available.

Some 17 989 work permits were issued in the years 2010 through 2015, with agricultural workers, carpenters and masons consistently among the top three occupations.

In 2010, 2 237 were granted, 2 459 in 2011, 2 075 in 2012, 3 890 in 2013, 3 841 in 2014 and 3 487 in 2015.
