Burning Martial Arts contest tomorrow

BARBADOS AND FOUR OTHER countries will compete in the 18th annual Bridgetown Burning International Martial Arts Championship tomorrow.

The multisport event encompasses Olympic-type wrestling that will feature young children, sanda (one of the disciplines of wushu), sports karate (kata), and beach wrestling. Athletes from Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Canada will join the host nation.

The event is set to feature the likes of sanchou (sanda), a Chinese national sport that has been developed through the police force. It is similar to Muay Thai, except that elbows are not used.

Barbados Wrestling Association president Rollins Alleyne said the event, set to begin at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, is to bring awareness to the sport. (RA)
