THE CHALLENGES AT the St George Secondary School will be further discussed next week at a meeting on May 4.
This decision came yesterday at the end of a three hour-long session convened and chaired by newly-appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, June Chandler, with several staffers and representatives of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), at the Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St Michael.
Following cordial exchanges by those present, the Permanent Secretary assured management and staff of the Constant, St George, school that the opportunity to further ventilate their concerns would come after the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination, set for Tuesday.
Yesterday’s meeting saw a wide range of issues tabled by teachers, other staff members at the school, and BSTU officials.
Key among these were student-on-teacher violence; student-on-student violence; environmental health and safety concerns; general indiscipline and reform of the school curriculum.
The meeting came in response to requests from the BSTU and the BUT for the Ministry to address a number of serious concerns at the St. George Secondary School.
It was also attended by Chief Education Officer, Karen Best; Director of the Education Technical Management Unit, Richard Harrison; and Chairman of the Board of Management, St George Secondary School, Joseph Holder. (BGIS)
