UWI BLACKBIRDS DOMINATED in the opening football match of UWI Games to trounce Open Campus 6-0 at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex on Thursday night.
The Blackbirds pulled out all the stops, as Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Eudine Barriteau, Barbados’ only living National Hero Sir Garry Sobers, Minister of Sport Stephen Lashley, and supporters were heard shouting encouragement from the stands on the eastern side of the grounds.
The crowd erupted after the first goal was scored by the Blackbirds in the fifth minute. However, the jubilation was shortlived as the referee called off-side. But less than 30 seconds later, Romario Watson shot straight past the keeper to give the winning side their lead.
At half-time, the Blackbirds were up 2-0, Axel George scoring the second goal in the 49th minute. (RA)
