NEW ZEALAND’S Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy and her husband Sir David Gascoigne travelled thousands of miles to savour Barbados during a brief official visit to the island last week.

There were the official engagements such as the meeting with Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave and the visit to Barbados’ cricket mecca, Kensington Oval where the New Zealand GG got to meet a living legend, National Hero Rt Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers.

But it was at the end of the whirlwind two-day trip that she got to experience a part of Barbados for which many a potential visitor to the island clamours – the idyllic setting of a terrace at Hilton Barbados fronted by the expansive white sand beach, and waves of the Caribbean Sea lapping the shore while strains of music floated across the twilight air.

Representatives of the local diplomatic and consular corps as well officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the judiciary were among guests at the cocktail reception. (GC)
