Levy could affect chicken prices

THE PLANNED INCREASE in the national social responsibility levy could hit the poultry industry hard.

Even if you’re not a poultry farmer, the hike could still spell bad news for you as two of the country’s top agricultural officials are  fearful that chicken will cost more.

Chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, and president of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers Association, Stephen Layne, indicated that poultry farmers were extremely concerned over the possible fallout from the rise in the levy from two to ten per cent.

Their main point of contention is that the levy, which is supposed to exclude agricultural products, may not exclude the costs to chicken processors who manufacture the final product. (AD)
