THE INTERNET WILL come into sharp focus next week when the first Barbados Internet Governance Forum is held here.

Over 50 people are expected to attend the meeting, which will be held on June 22 and 23, at the Cave Hill School of Business, University of the West Indies, under the theme: We Want To Hear From You. It will be hosted by the Internet Society Barbados Chapter and the Government of Barbados.

The forum will provide Barbadians from all sectors of society with a platform to discuss how they use the Internet and any pertinent issues affecting them. In addition, citizens will be educated about the various processes they can become involved in so as to increase their knowledge and make valuable contributions to Internet governance.

A number of persons from the region will make presentations during the two days. Some of the topics to be discussed are: Cyber Security; Gender Harassment; Democracy/Economy; Legislative Gaps Harmful To Businesses; and Digital Economy.

One of its key outputs will be the compilation of a comprehensive report detailing the critical Internet governance issues affecting business, government, civic organisations and the public.

The Internet Governance Forum is a United Nations global multi-stakeholder forum, designed to promote discussion and consensus on public policy issues relating to the Internet. It is an outcome of the United Nations-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society in 2005, and its 10-year mandate was renewed in 2015. (BGIS)
