Teachers urged to choose words wisely

THE 229 TEACHERS embarking on several courses of study at the Erdiston Teachers Training College have been told to choose their words carefully as they deal with their charges in the classroom.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones told the students that the harsh words of tutors and teachers can shatter or decimate confidence in a child.

Jones, who was speaking during the opening ceremony for several courses being offered by the teachers’ college, said he heard recently that as students celebrated their 11 Plus results, one teacher told a child to shut up because they barely made it into that school.

“As teachers – and I am still a teacher – we have to be so careful what words come out of our mouths because when they come out, don’t care how much we apologise, we cannot pull them back; it has already penetrated the being of a delicate child,” Jones said. (LK)
