More packages going postal

THE FUTURE IS NOT too dim for postal business.

That is because of the increasing number of packages the Barbados Postal Service (BPS) is handling and which could surpass the 100 000 mark this year.

“This year so far, up until March, we saw over 25 000 and this is not really the peak time. As we come near the end time of the year and summer, these volumes are going to go up,” Postmaster General Margaret Ashby told the DAILY NATION yesterday.

“So I can see from the trends of last year that we are going to be way over 100 000 pieces of such e-commerce items coming through our letter mail service, and this has nothing to do with the normal parcels. So the volumes of our packets have really grown a lot,” she added, while noting the drastic rise in this aspect of the business in the past two years. In 2015, the service handled 25 000 packages.

Ashby was speaking following the opening ceremony of the Operational Readiness for E-Commerce Workshop at the Caribbean Postal Training Centre, General Post Office Building, Cheapside, The City. (LK)
