WHAT NERVES? Bring on Alexander Zverev. Darian King seems ready and raring to go for his prime time showdown at the US Open, having said he isn’t really daunted at the prospect of playing the fourth-seeded German on Monday in his Grand Slam debut.
“I’m actually very excited as I know him particularly well seeing that we trained at the same Saddlebrook Academy in Florida. So we speak to each other in passing and we’re pretty cool but of course there are no friends once you get on the court,” said the 25-year-old King.
“At the end of the day I can’t be afraid of the moment because this is what I have been working all my life to get to. Playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam was always my dream, and to do it at the US Open is even better because this is my favourite tournament.
“You never know when next you’ll get an opportunity like this to play the sixth-ranked player in the world, or if I’ll ever get the chance to play another big player like that again, so I just have to go and prepare for this and hopefully seize my opportunity,” he added. (JM)
