CUP CONTENDERS UWI Blackbirds rebounded from their last game loss to Deacons by inflicting a defeat on double-crown queens Pan American International Insurance Warrens when the Goddard Enterprises Limited senior volleyball knockouts continued on Wednesday night at Kensington Bond.

Playing with the same poorness displayed by the Barbados Tridents a few yards away two nights before, Warrens were dismissed 10-25, 25-22, 21-25, 11-25. Warren’s weak performance should not underscore the superior play by the Blackbirds.

UWI’s Sharon Bovell and Dania Hamilton, along with setter Afyia Taylor, set the tone in attack from early to put Warrens under pressure. Young Teneille Chapman-Goodluck damaged Warrens’ vaunted passing game with eight successive curving serves which undid the queens in the first game.

Warrens did themselves few favours by committing multiple serving errors, matching equally poor reception while making numerous substitutions to stop the slide. Veterans Anthazia Mason, Talya Layne and Rhe-Ann Niles were not at their dominant best, and young Xhane Greenidge’s spiking struggles almost cost them the second set after leading 24-18. (KB)
