STILL REELING FROM the devastation wreaked on Barbuda by Hurricane Irma, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne said they might have to evacuate the 1 800 inhabitants of Barbuda as a second hurricane threatens.
In a live Facebook broadcast on ABS Television/Radio yesterday, Browne said 60 per cent of the people on Antigua’s sister island were homeless. A young boy lost his life as his mother tried to take them to safety during the storm.
He estimated it would cost $150 million to repair the housing stock alone, but Hurricane Jose was posing a second threat in the Atlantic Ocean.
“I am of the view, as it stands, that Barbuda is barely habitable and if we have yet another storm coming in a matter of days, we would have to make special arrangements to evacuate all Barbudians and bring them over here until we can restore some level of normalcy,” he said. (SAT)
