ROMAN CATHOLICS IN the Caribbean say they will appeal to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to write off the debts of countries in the region hit by Hurricane Irma.
“Given this situation now we are going to countries that are facing serious economic situations and already have loans to be repaid,” said Fr John Persaud, the general secretary of the Antilles Episcopal Conference, which comprises mostly bishops and archbishops of the Caribbean and Central America. “We are going to be seeking to see if we can make some appeals [on their behalf] for debt relief.”
He was speaking yesterday during a meeting of the Catholic lay media movement known as SIGNIS at the Living Water Community, St David’s, Christ Church.
During the meeting, Catholic bishop of Barbados Jason Gordon cited Antigua and Barbuda as a key example of a country needing help. (TG)
