‘More to weed than smoking it’

AS YET ANOTHER Caribbean territory signalled its intention to decriminalise small amounts of cannabis, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, is again making the case for Barbados to go that route.

Economist Jeremy Stephen said he also believed the crime troubling the island could have been significantly less had it made the move years ago.

Stephen, along with chairman of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, Dr Hensley Sobers, was discussing the topic, Driving Economic Participation Of Youth, at Cave Hill Friday evening. It was hosted by the UWI Youth Development Programme.

Following a decision taken by Jamaica in 2015, the Bermuda government announced days ago it would introduce legislation to decriminalise cannabis possession if the amount was fewer than seven grammes. (WILLCOMM)
