Home court advantage really paid off for Barbados. The hosts are making their mark at the first ever CARIFTA Triathlon Championships, having dominated the younger age groups of the aquathlon to take an early lead following yesterday’s opening morning sessions at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Led by resounding victories from Amelie Baker, Ashley Weekes and Niel Skinner, the Bajans topped the tables with 39 points – nine better than their closest rivals Guadeloupe.
It capped a stunning turn of events considering Barbados failed to earn a single point from the day’s very first race when none of the boys or girls finished in the top ten of the triathlon for the 16-19 age groups.
But the Bajans bounced back, and with a fury too, as Baker and Adia Deane swept the top two positions in the 11-12 girls’ aquathlon before Skinner led home a huge hometown contingent that took five of the first six spots in the 13-15 boys’ equivalent. (JM)
