The talent at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds shone through on Saturday night at the Combermere School for the fifth semi-final of the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA).

Slightly less than half of the performances on the night came from inmates at the prison. Competing in the theatre and music categories, their entries were notable for almost all being original works.

The stand-out piece from Dodds, and indeed of the night, was the full-length drama The Boss Big – Big Chiefa from the prison’s drama troupe Social Engineers.

The 45-minute piece took up about half of the first part of the show but despite its length, it didn’t drag. With short, fast-moving scenes, witty dialogue and plenty of action and humour, the play examined greed, ganja and guns and how the combination can tear friendships and society apart. (AL-F)
