Same Davis Cup

New changes. Same ole Davis Cup. Non-playing captain Damien Applewhaite doesn’t expect next year’s remodelled format to have any impact on Barbados’ chances in Group I heading into February’s opening round tie against Colombia at home.

Applewhaite expressed the sentiment after the ITF slimmed down the Davis Cup in an effort to attract tennis’ big names back to the 117-year-old event.

“It really has no impact on us small countries at all as it is pointed towards the bigger powers who have the Federers and Nadals,” explained Applewhaite.

“It is about getting them back playing and now they can have an additional fifth man on the team, so it means those bigger tennis nations can safely employ two doubles specialists and three singles specialists for a well-rounded team and not worry about wearing out players.” (JM)
