THE MANDELA FREEDOM PARK at Lower University Drive, St Michael, is pegged to be another revenue-generating arm of the University of the West Indies (UWI) – whenever it is eventually completed.
A senior source at the Cave Hill Campus told the DAILY NATION yesterday the park, which was officially opened on Tuesday, March 28, but has seen little activity since, would be available for events such as shows, meetings and other public events.
The source, who did not want to be identified, said this should allow the university to become more self-sustaining with “an enhanced entrepreneurial focus”.
However, public safety concerns, specifically in the areas of handrails and adequate lighting, along with the need for bathrooms, had prevented the university from fully maximising the open space. The handrails and lighting will be in addition to the monitoring provided by officers from the security team during the day. (YB)
