THE AVENGERS are on top.

Che Roach had two goals to put Williams Industries Avengers on top of the men’s hockey table via last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Combermere School at the Wildey AstroTurf.

Roach netted in the 17th and 55th minutes to sandwich a strike from former Deacons youth player Reshawn Greenidge in the 42nd.

The result put Avengers, who are tied with YMCA on 13 points, on the top of the table on goal difference as YMCA had their bye over the weekend.

Former leaders CSOS slipped further down the table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Massy United Insurance Empire.

Adeyro Williams pushed through a tackle from central defender Donovan Smith before catching CSOS keeper Theo Farley off-balanced with a well-placed shot early in the fifth minute.

National forward Aaron Forde seemingly equalised from a penalty corner, but umpire Shane Lewis immediately disallowed the goal for the ball not leaving the circle before the shot was taken.

In the day’s opening game, Deacons broke their poor run of form by coming from behind to upend All Stars 2-1.

Joshua Lefond scored the eventual winner three minutes shy of regulation after Derwin Burrowes levelled the scores on a penalty corner mere moments earlier.

This was after national forward Mario Moore gave Deacons an early lead by slipping one past Ayoub Suttle in the sixth minute.

Both Maple and BUT picked up walkover wins against BDF and UWI respectively when those two sides failed to field full teams.

On the women’s side, three different players scored for Blackbirds as UWI romped to a 3-0 victory over Williams Industries Avengers.

D’Jamila Edwards opened the scoring in the third minute via a penalty corner before Amaris Chase (29) and Ayanna Wilson (54) added goals of their own.

Earlier, Keisha Boyce netted two goals within five minutes of each other in CSOS’s resounding 3-0 blanking of BUT.

After a goalless first quarter, Boyce made a pair of brilliant runs in the 23rd and 28th minutes before Jada Prescod capitalised on a penalty stroke opportunity on the other side of the half.

Charlene Watkins-Lewis also had a brace in Massy United Insurance Empire’s similarly easy 3-0 win against Combermere.

Watkins-Lewis scored in the 25th and 37th and Khadijah Forde added a goal of her own in the 56th. (PR/JM)
