The Phillips and Springer Weightlifting Classic, which was one of the great successes of last year’s inaugural Barbados Independence Invitational Games, is expected to be even bigger and better when episode two comes off on Saturday at the St George Secondary School.
President of the Barbados Amateur Weightlifting Association, Andrew Callender, said that although most of the top local lifters would not be pushing it after a rough season that has left them with minor injuries, the fans can look out for a tremendous display from Louisa Peters of the Cook Islands.
“Peters will be competing in the 69 women’s K, which will give local fans the treat of seeing a big woman performing live in that category. With competitors also coming from Guyana and a number of local fitness groups, the fans can also look out for great performances from sisters Danielle and Zamora Callender, Romario Forde and Brian Best, along with first-timers Kim Sealy and Cagney Taitt,” said Callender.
At a press briefing held at St George Secondary, principal Dennis Browne said that they were thrilled to have the school be a part of the event and looked forward to many of the students being motivated to take up the sport and continue the sporting thrust of the St George Lions.
Thirty-three participants will be involved, including the one Cook Islands female and seven entrants from Guyana. Section one will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the bigger categories battling between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. (KB)
