The father charged in connection with the assault of a deputy principal and a teacher of two secondary schools, in defence of his son who was being bullied, was released on bail when he made an unexpected return to the Oistins Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
However, Ricardo Ameko Callender has been banned from going on the compounds of either the Christ Church Foundation or Deighton Griffith Secondary during school hours until his matter has been completed.
Callender, 43, of Unity Lane, Gall Hill, Christ Church, who was due back in court in two weeks after being remanded to HMP Dodds on Saturday by Magistrate Graveney Bannister, was charged with entering Foundation on November 16 and misconducting himself by assaulting deputy principal Peter Roger Cox, and refusing to leave the premises when directed to do so by Cox.
He has also denied that he did not leave the premises of the Deighton Griffith Secondary when told to do so by teacher Anthony Alleyne, and that having lawfully entered that school on November 16, he misconducted himself by assaulting Alleyne.
Yesterday, Assistant Superintendent Trevor Blackman renewed the prosecution’s objections to bail, citing the seriousness of the offences and that the offences occurred during school hours.
He also pointed to the strength of the evidence as he suggested to the court that the accused was likely to reoffend.
However, Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim, who represented the accused in association with attorney Samuel Legay, argued that the father had no previous convictions and had no pending charges before the court. He submitted that bail could be granted with any number of conditions to ensure his client’s return to court.
Magistrate Elwood Watts released the accused on $2 500 bail with a surety and adjourned the matter until February 1. (HLE)
