Two mysterious fires at the controversial Reduce Quarry, in an area no longer in operation, have led officials there to believe they were part of an attempt to sabotage the business.
During a MIDWEEK NATION visit to the Lower Estate, St George facility yesterday, Glenroy Bispham, a supervisor, said both fires occurred when workers were not on site, in the area were green waste and coconut shells were once stored. They were no longer accepting coconut shells or green waste.
“On Sunday we got reports that the plant was burning, so we capped it off. And [yesterday] when we turned up for work, there was a bigger fire in the same place. The fire was so big that the smoke had the entire area clouded to the point you could not see a thing,” Bispham said.
When contacted, owner of the quarry, Anderson Cherry, said the incidents “did not add up”. He added that a tender from the fire department responded on Sunday and officers gave the all-clear to commence work the next day. (SB)
