Barbados squandered a two-goal lead as Grenada captured the Windward Islands Football Association’s Women’s Tournament on Sunday night.
Despite scoring two early goals, Barbados wilted under the pressure and Grenada emerged 3-2 winners with a stoppage time strike on the final day of the tournament at Victoria Park in St Vincent.
Rianna Cyrus put Barbados ahead in the sixth minute, while Kimberley Ellis made it 2-0 in the 13th minute.
Merissa Charles pulled one back for Grenada in the 34th minute of play and the teams went to the half-time break with Barbados leading 2-1.
On resumption, Grenada kept pressing for the equaliser, which they found in the 62nd minute through Coie Smith.
Grenada showed that they had the extra energy when, in the dying stages, Roneisha Frank scored the winner to give the Spice Girls victory and the championship.
Barbados went into the match having defeated St Lucia 2-1 in their first game last Wednesday before playing to a 1-1 draw against St Vincent and the Grenadines two days later.
Grenada opened their campaign with a 1-0 win against St Vincent and the Grenadines, followed by a 1-1 draw against St Lucia to set the stage for Sunday’s championship decider against Barbados.
In the second match of the evening, hosts St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia played to a an exciting 3-3 draw.
The hosts started well, taking the lead in the 18th minute when Arima Kandice scored.
St Lucia equalised in the 24th minute through Ketina Joseph and took the lead in the 30th minute when captain Ellaisa Marquis scored. Marquis put her team further in the lead when she again scored in the 40th minute.
Samantha Carrington pulled a goal back for St Vincent and the Grenadines in the 53rd minute and teammate Arima Kandice Franklyn found the nets five minutes later to level the scores. (HG/PR)
