Nelson protest

ON THE EVE of Barbados’ Independence Day, the statue of polarising English soldier Horatio Lord Nelson, which sits on the western end of Heroes Square, was splashed with yellow and blue paint.

The vandals left a message at the foot of the statue, one of the main stops along for the tour of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.

It read: “Nelson Will Fall. This RACIST, white supremist who would rather die than see black people free stands proudly in our nation’s capital. NELSON MUST GO!! Fear not Barbados. The people have spoken. Politicians have failed us! Happy Indepence!!!”

Morris Greenidge, who conducts tours of Historic Bridgetown, said while he did not condone vandalism, it was not the first protest against Lord Nelson and he was not surprised. (LK/SAT)
