The recent Rugby Barbados World 7s has been hailed as a success.

Staged last weekend at the Frederick Smith Secondary School in Trents, St James, the event featured some of the best men’s and women’s club teams from Scotland, United States, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Barbados.

The players competed in front of over 400 spectators over two action-packed days of rugby for US $3 000 prize money in each division.

Manager of the local organising committee, George Nicholson, expressed his satisfaction with the tournament.

“While some heavy rains threatened to put a damper on proceedings and made the ground very heavy for running, the tournament was a great success, attracting significant interest from visitors, locals and potential sponsors alike,” he said.

“There has been significant growth in the tournament since last year and the Rugby Barbados World 7s organising committee, in collaboration with the Barbados Rugby Football Union, is proud to have been able to deliver a top quality tournament.

Nicholson also acknowledged all event partners and sponsors.

“Without this kind of support, the tournament could not be possible.”

ProjecX Waterboys from Scotland took the men’s title, a cheque for US$ 1500 and the BTMI men’s open trophy, while the Scion Sirens from United States claimed top spot for the women, winning US$ 1500 and the TDC 2017 women’s open trophy.

ProjecX Waterboy’s Ewan Miller and Scion Siren’s Ilona Maher were named the male and female tournament MVPs, and were each presented with a Tudor watch worth approximately US$4 000 by the owner of The Royal Shop, Hiranand Thani.

The Bajan Pride women’s team placed sixth and the JetBlues men’s team placed fourth.

Barbados men’s team captain Sean Ward said the happy with the squad fourth place.

“We had strong opposition, so placing fourth is still a very credible result for us,” he said. (PR/HG)
