It’s an honour. This was the theme of appreciation coming from nine Barbadians who made the 2018 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for their contribution to the development of this country in their respective fields.
The areas of recognition span the Public Service, the labour movement, education, the church, hospitalities and the essential services.
Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) was conferred on retired permanent secretaries Charles Livingstone Smith and Shirley Irene Farnum, who both said they felt honoured to be recognised for their service in the public sector.
“If I had to do the work all over again, I will do it. If I had to be employed again, I will work in the Civil Service where I can make a contribution to my country,” Smith said.
Responding to news that her tireless work in the public service has been recognised with the award of the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Farnum said: “I feel humbled and honoured because you know you served, but you do not expect to be honoured for it. However, when it comes it is a very humbling experience because it is such a great honour.” (NC/ES)
