The Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) isn’t alone in choosing a triumphant relay quartet for the coveted Sportsman of the Year award.

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) followed the example by selecting sprinter Jereem Richards and the members of the World Championships gold-medal T&T 4×400 metres relay team at its 23rd annual awards function at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain on Friday night.

The team of Jarrin Solomon, Richards, Machel Cedenio and Lalonde Gordon with Renny Quow as reserve, claimed the gold medal in the final of the IAAF World Championship in England in August in 2:58.12 minutes, forcing the United States (2:58.65) and Bratian (2:59) to settle for silver and bronze.

Richards, who also won a bronze in the 200 metres (20.11 seconds) also got the TTOC’s People’s Choice Award after voting was done on the social media.

Sprint queen Michelle Lee Ahye, who was sixth in the women’s 100 final when she clocked 11.01 seconds, was voted the Sportswoman of the Year for the second straight year.

CARIFTA Games’ double sprint gold medallist Khalifa St Fort was voted the Junior Sportswoman of the Year and Youth Commonwealth Games sprint medallist Adell Colthrust, the Junior Men’s equivalent.

Meanwhile, Akeem Stewart, who set a new world record at the Paralympics in the javelin throw last year, was named the TTOC’s Sports Personality of the Year.

Former West Indies women’s cricket captain Merissa Aguilleira copped the inaugural ‘Future is Female’ award. (EZS)
