Zane takes Cup in style at Daytona


Zane Maloney is the World Karting Association’s (WKA) Manufacturers’ Cup champion.

Driving for Speed Concepts Racing (SCR), the 14-year-old Barbadian driver opened his account on Friday with the third place finish in the opening rounds and then took pole position for the pre-final and final events at the world famous Daytona International Speedway, Florida.

“I am very pleased with my performance over the weekend, especially on Saturday, where I was able to qualify on pole, win pre-final and come out on top in the final,” he told NATION SPORT from the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday.

The young karter who is fifth in the world, also thanked his crew and his sponsors, Sol, Rock Hard Cement and Bushy Park Barbados, who made it possible for him to compete.

It was also a 1-2 for Speed Concepts Racing, as Tyler Gonzalez grabbed second place to crown an impressive weekend for the team as they get ready for the new season.

His younger brother Calem, who also took part in the WKA event, gave a good account of himself and finished sixth in the 60cc class out of a field of 45.

Highlighting the entry list was a pair of emerging Indycar talents. The first to announce their entry was Andretti Autosport Indycar driver, Zach Veach.

Also competing in this year’s event was the 2017 USAC Karting Battle at the Brickyard Ignite senior champion, Charlotte Lalonde, from Quebec, Canada.

Representing St Louis, Missouri was 2017 Gateway Kartplex Ignite Junior champion and WKA Yamaha Junior standout Evan Stamer.

Last year’s Gateway Kartplex Ignite senior champion Ryan Bettenhausen and runner-up Eric Loddeke also made their return to Daytona after their impressive debut last season.

From Chicago’s Autobahn Country Club was 2017 Ignite Senior track champion, Jordan Missig; North Carolina’s GoPro Motoplex LO206 front-runner, Justin Vancil, as well as Floridians John Morris and Hunter Morris. 

  A total field of 40 drivers faced the starter for the final. (TT)
