Angela Moore and Patsy Newton are two friends in two very different fields.
Moore is a woman with a vested interest in health, while Newton is gifted in flower design.
Moore is a certified colon hydrotherapist, nutritional microscopist, massage therapist and nutritional counsellor.
Currently she runs the Angela Moore Holistic Centre, formerly the Colon Hygiene Centre, and creates complementary medicines under the Healing Waters brand.
For Moore, journey into complementary medicine started when she visited a naturopathic doctor when traditional medicine failed her.
“I used to be sick all the time. Doctors would tell me ‘take this’ and ‘take that’ but none knew what was wrong with me. One day I went to a naturopathic doctor who told me I had a gall bladder problem and after I finally recovered, I decided I wanted to perform alternative medicine too,” she said.
Moore said there was a place for traditional and alternative/complementary medicine, but there had to be a “marriage”, which was why she worked closely with two medical doctors and merged her traditional roots with her complementary branches.
The Holistic Centre is now located in Union, St Philip, a peaceful area which fosters healing, close to Six Roads. There, any potential client can find a wide range of services.
However, this story will focus more on the product line, of which she has around 100. Moore said she imported some of what she used, but most of her products were made from local materials. She offers personal hygiene products, cleaning products, insecticides, pet care, food and more, all made from organic material.
An alternative
What I want people to know is there is an alternative in terms of organic products. Some people say they are too expensive, but when you buy chemicals then get sick then buy medication to treat that sickness, that is even more expensive,” she said.
Owing to her penchant for natural remedies, Moore is also an advocate for going green and promotes green living. She said she was a prime example of why someone should embark on a more natural life.
“I am an activist for going green as I am an example of someone who was very sick, but was saved by natural remedies,” she said.
The Holistic Centre is still in the process of being built and Moore has big plans for it. She said her colonic treatments would be restarting in March once the equipment is all set up.
Newton is also in the process of setting up. Her business Destination Florals opened this week along Maxwell Main Road, Christ Church. She said she lived by faith and this was reflected in her business.
“I had a flower shop for about three years, then I went overseas to live. I sold everything here and moved and when I came back in January last year, all my possessions were in suitcases. I just asked the owner of the building here if he had any space to set up a business, and it worked out,” she said.
Newton has worked in the flower industry for many years, both for others and herself, but when she returned home, she said there was only one way for her.
“I decided I really wanted to do my own thing full-time. I started with a photo shoot with a dress I made using fresh flowers to show how creative you can be using real flowers and it went from there,” she said.
Looking around the small but beautiful store, Newton’s passion could clearly be seen. She said her vision was to expand and reach out to people overseas and develop her shop into a major retailer and rental business “by faith”.
For now, Newton said her shop had already started well as she already has orders, from the very first day.
“It’s a small space but it’s a start. As soon as I opened, a gentleman walked in and ordered something – which was awesome,” she said with a laugh. (CA)
