Husbands blames gangs

More police, less trouble. That’s what Minister of Education Ronald Jones is hoping will occur if increased police patrols at schools become a reality.

Faced with a spate of recent violent incidences involving schoolchildren, Jones said the Ministry was considering beefing up security at schools with the help of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF).

“Schools have security personnel but some people have argued that two or three security persons are not enough. That might be suggesting that we might have to cooperate more with the RBPF, if not to have a permanent presence but to have a presence at different intervals across those places and at those schools which have tended to show more tendency towards indiscipline among some sections of that school population,” the outspoken minister told members of the media during a Press conference yesterday.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education Senator Harry Husbands said he believed gangs were responsible.

“There are gang elements in Barbados who are attempting to infiltrate the schools. The important thing is that they are adults, not children. The people who are standing around influencing these behaviours and encouraging some behaviours in the school are adults. That much is clear,” Husbands said. (RB/RA)
