CARIFTA Games’ athlete Triston Gibbons of Harrison College has won the Most Outstanding field events athlete award at this year’s Joseph Payne Memorial Athletics Classic.
Gibbons performed with distinction, breaking two meets records, in the Under-20 Boys’ discus and shot put when the Classic was held at the National Stadium on January 27.
The tall southpaw established new distances of 17.28 metres in the shot put and 55.67 metres in the discus. He erased the records of 16.48 and 44.64 previously held by his Elite Distance Programme club colleague and training partner Dequan Lovell, who was the 2015 Challenge Shield awardee.
A delighted Gibbons was presented with a number of prizes at a ceremony on Friday morning before a packed Harrison College school hall at full assembly in the presence of fellow students and teachers.
The former Coleridge & Parry schoolboy received the Joseph Payne Memorial Athletics Classic Challenge Shield which will bear his name and the year of his performance from Charles Walcott, chairman of the organising committee.
The shield will be displayed in an appropriate area at the Crumpton Street school until January, 2019.
Harrison College principal Juanita Wade presented Gibbons with a Seven Seas gift basket from Stansfeld Scott & Co Limited.
He also received an Alcatel A3 7” 3G tablet, compliments of Joseph Payne Memorial Athletics Classic and a gift voucher breakfast for two, courtesy of the Radisson Aquatica Resort from former Barbados athlete Andre Davidson, a member of the Classic’s organising committee. (EZS)
