Argyle Walker was driving on his left and proper side when his vehicle was sideswiped by another, sending it into a spin and then a slide, before it came to a rest in the grassy ditch at the side of the highway.
Walker, 63, of Thyme Bottom, Christ Church, died on the spot, while the driver of the other vehicle, Timothy Anthony Jordan, escaped with minor injuries in that 2012 accident.
Jordan, 30, of Lewis Gap, Green Hill, St Michael, confessed to his part in the accident when he appeared in the No. 5 Supreme Court yesterday.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on December 30, 2012, after he was arraigned with, and had denied, causing Walker’s death by dangerous driving on the Adams section of the ABC Highway.
Jordan was driving MK425, while Walker was in XB112.
Justice Pamela Beckles ordered a pre-sentencing report and allowed Jordan to remain on bail pending his return to court on May 8.
Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Anthony Blackman said investigations revealed Walker was on the left side travelling towards Grantley Adams International Airport, while Jordan was going in the opposite direction.
As Jordan reached a point on the highway where there was a slight bend in the road, he lost control of his vehicle on the wet surface, spun in a clockwise direction while travelling, at the same time, in the same direction as the car driven by Walker.
Jordan’s vehicle then slid across the road and hit the area of the right front seat occupied by Walker.
The impact tore the firewall of Jordan’s car from its main frame. Walker’s vehicle went into an anti-clockwise spin, slid backward for about 15 feet before coming to rest in the grassy area at the side of the road.
The firewall came to rest on the opposite side of the road heading to Bridgetown, while the rest of the vehicle ended on the side going towards the Henry Forde Roundabout (Newton).
Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
Dr Ross Herbert later pronounced Walker dead at the scene, while Dr Corinthia Dupuis, who performed the autopsy, found multiple external and internal injuries on Walker. Death was as a result of haemorrhagic shock secondary to a motor vehicular accident.
Jordan later told police he could not remember what had happened. He declined to give a written statement. (HLE)
