IN THE FACE OF dwindling enrolment numbers and persistent fiscal challenges, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus has received some much-needed financial support.
It has come in the form of several new scholarships from the business sector and individuals.
The announcement came from deputy principal, Professor Clive Landis, at the Cave Hill campus’ 15th annual Student Awards ceremony titled: Celebrating Success, Resilience And Excellence, on Tuesday night.
This academic year there were five new undergraduate awards:
The Carlos Holder Memorial Scholarship, valued at $2 000;
Hinds Transport Services Scholarship, worth $5 000;
Co-operators General Insurance Co. Scholarship, valued at $5 000;
The $5 000 Edgar & Joan Hynam Scholarship; and
Foster Foundation Scholarship Fund, worth $2 000.
There was also the introduction of the Anthony and Joy Bland Scholarship, awarded to three students, at $5 000 each.
Meanwhile, CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank donated 15 undergraduate scholarships worth $2 500 each for a total of $35 000, and SOL Caribbean scholarships totalling US$32 250 (BDS$64 500).
Speaking at the ceremony held in the Roy Marshall Teaching Complex, principal Professor Eudine Barriteau called on other entities and individuals to also give the campus their support.
She said the 70-year-old institution was positioned to be one of the strongest engines of economic activity in Barbados within the next five years.
“The Cave Hill campus is open to business and for business. Let the word go forth throughout the business community. We look forward to expanding the number of entrepreneurs-in-residence as a complement to our newly installed Professors of Practice which you shall soon hear more of.” (SDB Media)
