Just this month alone, fires have resulted in almost 40 Barbadians losing their homes. The latest tragedy occurred Saturday night at Silver Hill Landing Scheme, Christ Church, when Judy Nurse, 59, and Kathy-Ann Proverbs-Gooding were left pondering their next step after losing all their possessions to fire.

Police reported the blaze began around 10:10 p.m. in Nurse’s wooden home and quickly spread to the wall house next door where Proverbs-Gooding was asleep.

When a NATION team arrived, Nurse was gone but a distraught Proverbs-Gooding spoke about what she experienced.

“I was lying down when I hear a body screaming. I open my window and see the flames, so I went through my back door with a hose and see all the back of that house burning,” she said. (CA)
