Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) will operate under a private-public partnership (PPP), the Student Revolving Loan Fund (SRLF) will be taken over by a private lending institution, and several statutory corporations will be restructured.

These are some of the plans outlined in the proposed public sector expenditure reduction programme which was extensively circulated on social media over the last two days.

It is part of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) plan, the island’s International Monetary Fund-approved programme designed to “transform the economy of Barbados, generating sustainable and inclusive growth”, while making these institutions “fit for purpose” in service delivery and financial operations.

The four-page document gives more specific timelines to some of the ventures outlined by Prime Minister Mia Mottley in her fireside-style chat with the nation on October 14. (SAT)
